April 17th – The Daughters of Penelope Present “Journey and Care of Dementia”

The Ottawa Daughters of Penelope invite everyone to our Annual Speaker Series on Wednesday, April 17, 2019, starting at 7:00 p.m. in the Church Hall.  Our speaker is Gill Michelin and the presentation describes the journey of dementia.  This presentation is open to the public, all are welcome.

Gill Michelin is a social worker and Psychogeriatric Resource Consultant with Geriatric Psychiatry Community Services of Ottawa.

She has worked in the field of dementia care for the 30 years. She was part of the team that designed and implemented the first day program in North America for dementia clients. She was also a case manager with Geriatric Psychiatry Community Services of Ottawa for the past 20 years.

This presentation describes the journey of dementia to the end stages and highlights the increased significance that emotions play as cognitive and functional abilities decline by identifying triggers of responsive behavior. By understanding the emotional triggers, we can influence behavior and hopefully decrease negative responses.
