How to view Greek text
Are you able to read the following
text? If not, continue reading.
Αυτή
η γραμμή είναι γραμμένη στα Ελληνικά.
The following is going
to be a quick guide of what you have to do to be able to view
Greek text on this or any web site. After you read this, you should
be able to view Greek text without any problems...*hopefully*
without any problems!
We're going to concentrate on two
web browsers running on Microsoft Windows 95/98. The two browsers
are Netscape Navigator/Communicator and Microsoft Internet Explorer
since they are the most widely used. Look for the browser that you're
using and follow the steps below to viewing Greek fonts. If you
follow the given steps and you're still not able to view Greek text,
I strongly suggest you upgrade to the latest Netscape or Microsoft
browser. As well, if you find inconsistencies in the steps below,
e-mail us.
Good luck!
Netscape
Communicator (4.x):
By default, your browser is probably using Western encoding
(i.e. U.S.). To view Greek text, you need to change the default
encoding to be used when viewing pages. To set this, go to the
View menu, select Character Set and then select Greek ISO-8859-7.
You can set your default encoding by selecting the View menu,
Character Set then Set Default encoding. Now, the next time you
start up your browser, you will be able to view Greek text automatically
and still view Latin characters without any problems.
Netscape Navigator(3.x):
These steps are similar to the previous browser. You need
to choose the default encoding to be used when viewing pages.
To do this, you select Options then Document Encoding and finally
Greek. To make this the default encoding for your browser every
time you start it up, select Options then Document Encoding and
then Set Default.
Microsoft Internet
Explorer(4.x):
Select the Help menu, then choose the Product Updates and answer
OK to the dialog box question and choose to install the Pan-European
Language Support. Then go to the View menu, choose Internet Options
and finally Fonts. Click on "Greek" fonts then choose Greek
Alphabet (ISO) from the Character Set drop down menu. To make this
the default behaviour, click on the Set as Default button.
Microsoft Internet
Explorer(5.x, 3.x):
This is very similar to the above procedure. Select the Tools menu,
then Windows Update and answer OK to the dialog box question and choose
to install the Pan-European Language Support. Don't install the Language
Auto-Selection. Then go to the Tools menu, select the Internet Options
item and then finally Fonts. There, you should see Greek as one of
the items in the "Language Script" area and then choose
"Greek" from the pull down menu.
Again, if you find any inconsistencies
in the steps given above, please e-mail us.
