Originally from Montreal, Canada and of Greek descent George Sapounidis Ph.D. embodies the multicultural diversity of Canadian society within a single artist and has been called "a modern day Theodore Bikel" and "all around musical ambassadeur du monde". He sings in eight different languages, has a commanding, articulate stage presence and is a virtuoso on the Greek bouzouki. His CD, titled International Folk Songs, features performances in five languages over eleven songs.

From 1988-1997 he was leader of the well-known Greek-Canadian band Ouzo Power which brought the sound of contemporary Greek music to audiences at Canadian multicultural and folk music festivals as well as to CBC radio and television. From 1995-1997 he was a member of The Continentals, a Toronto-based trio performing eclectic international repertoire. In 1993 he participated in a series of world music productions in Montreal and Quebec City mounted by Quebec jazz singer Karen Young.

In June 2000 he presented a concert titled East meets West at the National Library of Canada Auditorium in Ottawa. This concert presented the music of China, Greece, Quebec and Latin America performed by an array of Canadian international performers.

In November 2000, at the invitation of the Chinese Embassy in Ottawa, he represented Canada at two international festivals in mainland China as a solo performer:

    • The Shanghai Baoshan International Folk Art Festival
    • The Nanning International Arts Festival of Folksongs (Guangxi Region)

On July 1, 2001 the National Capital Commission (NCC) in Ottawa presented two performances by Sapounidis as part of the 134th Canada Day Celebrations taking place across the National Capital Region.

"… the Chinese folk songs that he sings are especially exceptional and touching… I hope that he can continually sing for the friendship between China, Canada, and Greece." Mei Ping, Ambassador of P. R. China

"… he is an exceptional artist and a beacon in a strife ridden world - his art transports, entertains and instructs." J. Thomoglou, former Ambassador of Greece
