Seniors- Macedonians 3rd
Annual
Backgammon Tournament
Sunday
April 13, 2003
at the Hellenic Seniors Centre
The
Seniors Centre offers Greek TV programming, a Greek History library,
music, billiards, foosball, backgammon, chess, cards and many
other social and cultural activities for all ages.
The 3rd Annual Backgammon
Tournament was carried out once again with great success, even
surpassing last year's overwhelming results. The number of participating
players was exceeded by that of the many visitors who enjoyed
a fun social day at the Hellenic Seniors Centre.
The following
players competed hard for approximately four preliminary games each
with the following participants winning their place in the semifinals:
Semifinal 1: Mr. Nick
Savvidis vs. Mr. Louis Papoulias
Semifinal 2:
Mr. Thomas Koloniaris vs. Mr. George Aliferis
After some very exciting
and extremely close play Mr. Louis Papoulias (6-4) and Mr. Thomas
Koloniaris (5-4) eliminated their opponents and became the victorious
finalists. A hard fought concluding contest ensued, for approximately
one hour, with the outcome coming down to the "wire", and Mr.
Louis Papoulias emerged as the Tournament Grand Champion with
a score of 7-6!
Mr. Louis Papoulias,
as the Grand Champion, had his name engraved in the Champions
Trophy, which is permanently on display at the Hellenic Seniors
Centre. In addition, he was awarded a commemorative Macedonian
"Vergina Sun" pin and $100.00.
Mr. Thomas Koloniaris,
for his finalist achievement and eventual Runner up standing,
received a commemorative Macedonian "Vergina Sun" pin and $50.00.
The event organizer
and Tournament Referee, Mr. Sotiris Giovanopoulos, on behalf of
Mr. George Kanellakos, President of the Seniors Association, would
like to express a heartfelt "thank you" to all the participants
and audience as well as the Executive Councils of the Hellenic
Seniors and the Macedonian Associations of Ottawa for their support.
Mr. Nick Kardaras must also be thanked for the Tournament's excellent
food preparation.
Mr. Dean Karakasis'
efforts, for the by now fully …computerized results tabulation,
administration and counseling of the event, were, once again,
invaluable and greatly appreciated.
Mr. Damianos Papadakis,
again this year, is specifically acknowledged, and is worthy of
our gratitude, for his diligence in the … enlisting of players
as well as his making everyone feel at home in the Seniors Centre
during the event! The Tournament would not have been such a success
without his efforts.
Everyone is welcome
to join in and show off their Backgammon prowess!
Keep practicing
and we hope to see you next year!
