GENERAL INFORMATION & HISTORY OF THE HELLENIC LANGUAGE SCHOOL

For the Greeks, the Greek language, beyond its richness and historic importance, is an integral part of their heritage and a very essential element of their existence as Greeks. The carrier, that will transmit this valuable elements of the Greek heritage to the future generations of Greek-Canadians is the Hellenic (language) School.

The history of the Hellenic School of Ottawa begins in the late '30s when Reverend Fr. Vassilios Demeroutis organized the first classes. Since then the School had gone through many changes and adjustments. Throughout the years the School operated under the administration and financial assistance of the Hellenic Community of Ottawa. From 1975 to 1994 classes were offered twice a week; Wednesday (6:00pm - 8:00pm) and Saturday (9:00am-12:00pm)

In 1978 the Ontario Ministry of Education began the "Heritage Language Programme". The programme was financed by the Ministry through the Ottawa Board of Education.
