| Welcome to Sunday School ! |
Our goal is to make Sunday mornings a fun learning experience for the children. We hope to accomplish this through age-appropriate crafts, songs, discussion and group activities and attending Liturgy. Living our faith begins with the family. Please lead your children in prayer, make the sign of the cross together, say the Lord’s Prayer, etc. at home and as we reinforce this at Sunday School.
Registration Age: Children who are not four years of age by December 31, 2011 may not register for Sunday school until the following year.
Sunday school will begin on September 11 at 10:15 am! Lessons begin at 10:15 am, Please arrive at 10:10 am each Sunday to ensure that your child does not miss any part of the activities. We ask that students arriving after 10:30am join their parents upstairs as to not interrupt their classrooms session. Please pick up your child from the classroom immediately following Church Service (within 15 minutes of the end of Liturgy) as the teachers must wait in the classroom with the children until you arrive.
‘Visit Father Alex’ will take place on the first Sunday of each month (see calendar). You will notice a change this year to our “Visits with Fr. Alex”. The children will be visiting Fr. Alex in church every second month and Fr. Alex will visit their classrooms on various days of the month. Children are asked to meet their teachers at 10:15 am.
“Junior Choir with Eleni and Paulina” Part of the Orthodox Curriculum is for children to know the various Hymns of our Orthodox Faith. In order to ensure our children learn these Hymns we have launched a Junior Choir portion to our Sunday school. Every month, children will meet with our choir directors in order to learn Hymns and prepare for holiday celebrations i.e. Christmas Recital, Graduation, etc. On these days, we have extended our Sunday school session time until 12:30 pm. We ask parents to not interrupt the session and if you need to leave early please inform your child’s teacher. Children who wish to not participate in Junior Choir are asked to join their parents in church following Communion.
Attendance
Dress Code All students are to dress in respectful attire, appropriate for Church.
Offerings We ask that students bring a small offering to class each week (we do accept Ortho Dollars). This teaches stewardship and encourages the children to take pride in their Church through active participation and support.
Holy Communion Please Check the Calendar in order to prepare your child to receive Holy Communion. Each class will receive Communion in rotation. It is very important to notify the teachers if your child is not prepared to receive Communion with their class, or will receive Communion with you on a day other than their designated day. Please note that if a child expresses to the teacher that he/she does not want to receive Communion with the class on their designated day, the teacher will respect that child’s wishes.
Parental Help We are looking for parents who would like to join our Sunday school team in assisting us with various items including holiday celebrations set up/clean up, monitoring Food Drive and assisting with Operation Christmas Child. Please do not hesitate to speak with any one of the volunteer Sunday school staff about questions that you may have or provide suggestions and offer your assistance in any way that you see is needed throughout the year.
Supply Fee This year, we are asking for a $20.00 classroom fee per family in lieu of holding Bake Sales. Parents will only be asked to bring nut-free baked goods for special occasions: Meet the Teachers, Christmas Celebration, Godparent Sunday, and Graduation.
Emergencies The teachers must be able to contact you in case of an emergency. If you will not be in church, please advise the teachers where you can be reached.
Operation Christmas Child We are launching our Christmas Shoe Box program once again. This year, the boxes will be benefiting children in overseas communities as well as our own community. A letter will be sent home October 16, 2011 with further information.
Communication Throughout the year we will be sending emails to families with important information and updates. Please ensure that hcosundayschool@gmail.com is on your safe list.
We wish you all a happy School Year!
