GOYA: WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE DO.GREEK ORTHODOX YOUTH OF AMERICAInformation and Registration Form What is GOYA ?The Greek Orthodox Youth of America, or GOYA is a ministry to teenagers (ages 13-18) of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto (Canada). The youth ministry is based on four characteristics of Liturgia (worship), Koinonia (fellowship), Diakonia (service) and Martyria (witness). Activities are therefore planned to incorporate these characteristics. Who is in GOYA ?The GOYA leadership in our parish is comprised of our Spiritual Leader Father Alex, the Youth Director Anastasia Lyras-Vassilyadi, several parent advisors and the GOYA officers. The parents are involved in GOYA ministry; they help formulate and implement the program. They also chaperone meetings, activities and trips. The success of GOYA depends on parental support. Our Dormition of the Virgin Mary GOYA has officers and a board. The current President is Tina Pezoulas; Vice President is Fotis Vassilyadi; Treasurer is John Zafiriou; Secretaries are Anastasia Reklitis and Christal Vassilyadi. They have all been working diligently together. Board members become chairpersons for important functions such as retreats, dance and bake sales by volunteering. There are currently 45 youngsters of our community in GOYA. Why have GOYA ?The role of the GOYAns is to actively live their Orthodox faith. It is the vehicle in which they can develop their lives, faith and morals. The GOYAns learn to exercise their leadership abilities such as public speaking, delegation and working with people. Sportsmanship is demonstrated through their ability to play sports. Two retreats are held a year. Through the spiritual retreats the GOYAns enjoy a special time for a change of pace, fellowship, reflection, growth, and bonding as community of faith. They reflect and represent the parish. All their activities, discussions, represent the Orthodox Christian lifestyle. Our GOYA is simply a microcosm of the life of the church. When and where do they meet? The GOYAns gather once a month with the spiritual advisor and the advisors for fellowship and guidance. The meeting consists of prayer, icebreaker activity, business, announcements, a presentation on a relevant topic chosen by Father Alex based on the needs of the group. Snacks and refreshments are served. The meetings take place in the church building. Outings are also planned to increase group interactions along ministry lines to heighten fellowship and to begin living and learning the Orthodox faith. A Dance has been traditional for GOYA as well as bake sales. Fundraisers and stewardship are also emphasized. A year-end trip is being considered for this year. Information and Registration Form
